I am interested in how many of these nVidia has sold. Even with this added functionality they still seam so gimmicky. I honestly do not think I would use it much even if one was given to me. And I game a lot.

I agree with you. I can't imagine they are even walking off the shelves. Most people seem happy to use the tablet or phone they already own for mobile gaming.

However my guess is that this was neer released as a product that would be a success, but probably more as a stepping stone for future ambitions.

This was initially released to put Tegra 4 on display. From what I remember they had no design wins at the time they demoed this. If that was all it was designed for then I would consider it a success.

I have a question: how many Bluetooth gamepads can be connected to it in console mode?

I might consider getting this if the $50 off was extended to anyone in the last year who bought a GTX 660 or higher.

I think that misses the point. If this is a feature that can be enabled on any Tegra4 SoC, then every single Android 4.3 Tegra 4 device can become a microconsole (so long as it has BT and an HDMI port).

Shield is then an exemplar, but not necessarily the end goal. If this transforms the platform into a console to compete against the XB1 and PS4, and make it something competitive with Apple's AppleTV+iOS combo (which can do something similar), then NVIDIA has a more competitive platform than it otherwise would.

I got one, and I use it a lot more than I thought I will and I use it to play android games rather then stream, which is what I thought I would use it for, I love it.

Judging from the 5 star reviews on NewEgg, everyone who has bought one, has gave it raving reviews.

"I’ve been primarily using microSD for storing movies and music on Shield for when I travel"
You heard it here first people, Mr. Klug is using an mSD card in a portable device! Heyo! :D

If Nvidia were to release a stripped down version of shield, just the guts with no controller or screen, to use as a PC game streaming device and/or big screen android device for cheaper ($149), I'd be instantly interested in that. I think that would be a fairly easy price point to hit with no screen, smaller battery, and no controller buttons.

This is what Madcatz is doing with their Tegra-4 powered MOJO micro-console, but the price is still $249 ($50 cheaper than current SHIELD price). I think a Tegra 4 Android-powered console would be pretty attractive around $149-199. The OUYA was priced amazing at $99, but the lack of Google Play and performance of Tegra 3 were disappointing.

This is something I would buy immediately. I would love to be able to play the PC version of GTA 5 on one of my TV's. I think it needs to be around $99 though, since that is how much the AppleTV is. Maybe up to $149 if it included a controller. This would make consoles essentially pointless for anyone who has a decent gaming PC. Make it stream PC games, play Android games, use Android apps like Netflix, Hulu, etc. That would be amazing.

I like what Mad Catz is doing, but the priced it way too high. I also have little faith that it will work as well as something Nvidia makes themselves.

Nvidia, please make a Shield Console. I will buy it, and I feel like many others would too.

Buy a vid card and you get shield for $200. I'd rather have the whole thing so I can go portable and have fun. The point is to replace the need for vita/3ds and xbox due to the streaming pc stuff. No need for handheld or console now. Couple that with Gsync (and my future monitor purchase that is planned) and I have no choice but NV for a few devices most likely...No vid card for me though until 20nm to replace my radeon 5850.

Priced right this is the thing for kids to take with on the trip to Grandma's house. Or even the thing for Grandma to buy for the kids to use when at her home. No box to haul to bring along and hook up to Grandparent's tv.

Hopefully this thing lasts until version 3.0, so we can see a version of it with the ARMv8 Denver CPU and Maxwell GPU.

I wanna see at least one AAA Exclusive Title for the shield, and then this thing will really take off.

Hawken...Runs on a PC too, but no other consoles.

They at least have some really cool games already and the library is growing. I can see me purchasing rev2 with kepler mobile. Until then I have a vid purchase coming first. I can't wait to see a full quarterly results report selling these, and also next Q after xmas to see what the bundling effect is. Last quarter they'd only sold for a few days so no real results, we should get a breakdown this Q or at least next Q in Jan/Feb. I wish NV would make an announcement of 1B for tegra games though (say over 5yrs or something 200mil per year for AAA games) like MS. That would really hurt consoles. I'd also like to see them announce a TEGRA BOX console that's 100watt or so to fully attack consoles, hopefully that comes next year with a special kepler mobile chip or something or maybe Denver models. I want consoles dead and android/linux gaming to take out directX so I won't need windows/Intel repeatedly overcharging my wallet for games.

Only 3 fatal problems of this device:
    - weight
    - shape is pocket unfreidly thich brick in comparison to Vita like Archos Gamepad, GameMid etc
    - fan
  • ArthurG - Tuesday, October 29, 2013 - link

weight: it gives great feeling and stability when playing. Not an issue at all.
shape: ergonomics vs size, cant get both
fan: a benefit, SHIELD doesn't throttle and the noise is inaudible
